Design Museum director Tim Marlow led the tributes, saying it was "a privilege and an inspiration to know him". In a statement, Marlow wrote: "Terence Conran was instrumental in the re-designing of post-war Britain and his legacy is huge. He also created a great institution - the Design Museum - of which he was justifiably proud and with which he remained fully engaged right to the end of his extraordinary life.

Designer and architect George Clarke, gardener and broadcaster Monty Don, and restaurant critic Marina O'Loughlin were among others paying tribute. So sad to hear the news that TerenceConran has passed away today.

Habitat becomes a public company. As Chairman of Hepworths, uses his position on the board of a menswear chain to develop Next. Buys 11 acre site at Butlers wharf for redevelopment. Conran Octopus created with Paul Hamlyn to produce educational but inspiring books about interiors, gardening and cookery. Benchmark furniture-making company set up in the grounds of his home in Berkshire. Named Provost for the Royal College of Art. Starts developing the Conran Collections, a series of brand licensed products that reflect his lifelong philosophy to bring good quality, contemporary homewares to a wider audience.

Awarded Prince Philip Designer of the Year award for services to design. Launches range of cookware for Royal Doulton. Becomes an honourary Doctor of Science at Southbank University. Chipperfield today heads a substantial international practice. And so, Chipperfield, who is in so many ways quintessentially English, has become the most European of British architects. What led you to work in furniture design and manufacture? Most of these were published by Conran Octopus, the illustrated-book publisher he founded with Paul Hamlyn. Married four times — he tied the knot with his fourth wife Victoria Davis in — Conran is survived by his five children: fashion designer Jasper, designers Sebastian and Sophie, and restaurateurs Tom and Edmund. He was knighted in and appointed Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in the Birthday Honours for services to design.

Still working right to the end, Sir Terence Conran will be remembered for countless commercial achievements, but most impressively of all, for possessing a clear and compelling vision for the future of design, retail and hospitality — and the strength of character to make his vision a reality.
