I agree that Huck Finn is a great book, but Mark Twain knew that the n-word was not a polite term to use in everyday language. That was not the proper term to address African-Americans. It was just as offensive back then as it is today. Again, not that it isn't an excellent book, but Mark Twain knew that the novel would cause controversy. The school board agreed to keep the book in the curriculum, but only if Chadwick returned in August to lead a workshop for instructors on how the book should be taught. She did and the book remains on the reading list for students. Whatever the reason, the continuing complaints about the book have landed it as No. Very much offended, one assumes. But surely, that does not stop any teacher from talking about that topic. Just because history is harsh and not always the most pleasant thing to learn about, does not mean that we can ignore it.

The book shows that we should treat people in a good way even if they are not like us. It reveals the horrible consequences of inhumanity, the meaningless suffering and unbearable pain of innocent people. These reasons show that the book is very important for the grown-ups because it deals with fundamental questions about humanity and moral values. Maine Public article on teaching Huck Finn thoroughly explores why this book is difficult to teach but offers tips on how to address the language of it.

It also mentions ways of talking to a class that is mixed, dominantly white or African American, or if one or the other is the minority. The use of the n-word would be in a class setting and teachers will have to be open about the meaning and history behind it. Generally speaking, the problems Rodriguez faced were very bad. If the teachers had been more considerate and thoughtful about the difficulties he was facing it would have been avoided easily and efficiently, because your cultural identity and native language are the ones that tell who you are.

Schools should support bilingual education and encourage their immigrant students to continue speaking their native language to prevent this. Racism is violent! When we take a look back at history, there is nothing sadder than seeing how people were treated when they owned different skin color from others. People are born equally. Huck realizes that he and Jim are equal, and since Huck has a well revered personality this encourages a pro-equality mindset.

However, at the complete opposite end of the spectrum lies the portrayal of Pap. Finally, I think Mark Twain was not as nice a person as he makes himself out to be in many of his books. He often says very mean things to nice people. As the old saying goes "don 't judge a book by it 's cover" don 't judge Mark by his books do some extra digging. Life was not easy for Twain but that does not change how you are supposed to treat people and be a kind person.
